What's new on Jacksonville.com

As you might have already noticed, there are plenty of differences on the new Jacksonville.com. Since there are so many, and since we are excited to bring them to you, we want to give you a quick idea of what to expect and how to take advantage of this site.

  • You can write a blog
  • You can comment on just about everything
  • You can add events to our rocktacular events calendar
  • You can use us like YouTube
  • You can join or create groups for people with similar interests
  • You can add your photos
  • You can enter and win prizes in our contests!
  • You can become a part of our team
  • You can meet and learn a bit more about us
  • Old Logo

    Then there's our logo.

The old Jacksonville.com logo had a sailboat and a nifty font called "Good Times." Well, even though we were pretty attached to it, we decided that it was time for the old design to...sail away (sorry, had to).

    New Logo

Our shiny new logo represents our shiny new site. Both were built from the ground up, one pixel at a time. The little blue talk bubble on top of the "J" in Jacksonville is our way of saying "talk to us." We all know that news is no longer a one-way conversation, which is why you can blog, comment, upload photos and videos, all with a Jacksonville.com username.

Of course, that's not everything, but it gives you a good idea of what we're most proud of. For a more complete list of the cool stuff, you can click back to our WikiJax page.

When I tried to vote, it stated: You have already submitted this form. Not true. How about fixing this.

    Thank You.

As soon as I registered and got my password assigned, I could vote without problems. The password part was a little tricky -- not included in the original screen for registering...but, present in an e-mail sent shortly thereafter.

    Sorry for the comics problem.

There's some system glitch that is requiring you to register and sign in to add your vote - if you're not signed in, you get a notice that you have already voted.

We're working on fixing that, and you can create a username here: http://jacksonville.com/user/register

Terrible lengthy process & then I haven't been able to find my way back to vote. What do I click on? Where's the headline/subject? Not worth it....

Ditto - have spent over 1/2 hr already trying to find out where to vote for the comics. TU Website navigation very convoluted and not user-friendly.

    Polar Bear Plunge

I am preparing myself for tomorrow's Polar Bear Plunge at Jax Beach by looking at photographs and videos of my visit to Alaska a few years ago. I am visually immersing myself in the calving glaciers of Glacier Bay National Park and the snow-capped mountains around White Pass just over the U.S./Canada border from White Horse, Yukon Territory. I will take a couple of these photos with me tomorrow hoping that the 50 degree F. waters of Jax Beach will look as balmy as the waters of Varadero Beach, Cuba IN the summer by comparison. I will follow up on this foolish New Year whim tomorrow as soon as my fingers thaw out. Paco.

    Polar Bear Plunge

After a replenishing and body restoring 4 hours of sleep, I got up at 7:15 AM, had my breakfast of cafe con leche and headed out on JTB towards the beaches. At 8:00 AM on New Years morning, JTB looks like a movie prop highway of the post-apocalyptic genre right after the epidemic. Visuals of legend Will Smith running around Manhattan kept popping up as I listened to Stravinsky's Firebird for moral encouragement and renewal of purpose. All the sources that I consulted had indicated that the participants would meet in front of the Sea Walk Pavillion at 8:30 AM and then take the plunge at 9:00 AM. As it turned out, the actual mass, lemming-like plunge had already taken place by the time that I got there at 8:40. When finally I got to the sand, after fighting dozens and dozens of the just-plunged participants that were going in the opposite direction, there were only a few stragglers left in the two feet surf. This was a bit dissapointing at first but then, the more I thought about it, the more that I gleaned some comfort from it. I thought "well..all these people and there doesn't look like there has been any heart attacks", I immediately looked south to my right towards the Red Cross lifeguard station and it did not look particularly busy. Enboldened by all this, I sort of yelled "Let's roll!". I rolled in into the coolish water and rolled right out. Perhaps a grand total of 1 minute and 45 seconds for the whole operation including the running in, the heroic head first dive, the vertical jump out of the water and the run back out. It would have been less time if the good looking couple (they were fellow straglers) hadn't asked me to take their picture. In my favor though, I must explain right here that I did this without the benefit of a wet suit unlike that coward, Pierre the penguin. I dried off, speed walked to one of the concession tables, stimulated the economy by buying a $20.00 t-shirt and got to hear the presentation of the prize for youngest female participant. It went to a very young girl exotically named Maria Rodriquez which resulted in a "fascinated" kind of murmur from the crowd. When asked where she was from by the guy with the megaphone, she said "Jacksonville Beach". Only a quiet murmur from the crowd...you'd think that there would be more pride of place. All in all, it was a pleasant experience, with a lot of camaraderie and such and next year, if I decide to do it again, I want to take the plunge with the rest of the lemming bunch. I imagine that it would be more exciting this way and definetely somewhat warmer.
